The Kitsap Sun, the Scripps newspaper in Bremerton, Wash., won national recognition this weekend from the Associated Press Sports Editors.
The Sun’s Sports section was named one of the top 10 sections in the nation for its circulation size by the Associated Press Sports Editors.
The APSE named The Sun top 10 for daily sections and top 10 for Sundays in the annual awards. The awards are voted on by sports editors across the nation and honor work from 2012.
“It feels great to be recognized again by APSE for our department's great work in sports,” said David Nelson, editor of the Kitsap Sun. “We've had a long string of years where we've received at least one Top 10 or honorable mention, but this is the first time since 1998 that we've been named Top 10 for both daily and Sunday sections. We hear a lot of positive feedback in the community for our coverage, particularly of high school sports, and it's great to be awarded on the national level as well.”
The Kitsap Sun has earned recognition from the APSE for either top 10 or top 20 (honorable mention) for daily and/or Sunday sections every year since 1996 except for two years.
The Sports section was under the leadership of sports editor Chuck Stark in 2012 with staff writers Nathan Joyce, Jeff Graham and Annette Griffus.
