A man wearing his favorite player’s jersey leans with anticipation over the tunnel as the Detroit Pistons take the court. As each player runs out below, you can see the man still searching. When the steady stream of professional players ends, he sits down in disappointment, checks his phone and tears off the jersey with frustration revealing a University of Kentucky t-shirt underneath. His favorite player, Tayshaun Prince, a Pistons defender and former UK star, has been traded to the Memphis Grizzlies.
People watching this take place on January 30 at Conseco Fieldhouse in Indianapolis could feel his disappointment and the video went viral. (You can watch the video by clicking this link or the picture below.)
The Commercial Appeal, the Scripps newspaper in Memphis, saw an opportunity.
The fan, Cory Brandt, was clearly a die-hard Prince fan.
The Commercial Appeal, in conjunction with the Grizzlies, arranged a trip to Memphis and a surprise meeting with Prince for Brandt, his wife and their infant son. They thought they were there for an interview and to watch the February 10 game.
Brandt, a 27-year-old graphic designer from Greenwood, Ind., was doing a video interview with The Commercial Appeal when Prince appeared, sliding an arm around Brandt's shoulders.
At halftime, Brandt and family received a warm ovation from the crowd when he was introduced as "the newest Grizzly fan."
